1 Volume. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Sonnets from the Portuguese. Limited Edition. Bound by St. Dunstan and illuminated by Ross Turner in full green morocco. The covers display incredibly ornate gilt tooling around the edges as well as lighter green inlay in a rectangle and a border around the rectangle. Inside this inlay are a central detail and other fine detailing in gilt tooling as well as small details in red inlay. Raised bands gilt with panels displaying gilt-tooled label lettering. The top edge is gilt with ornate gilt-tooled turn-ins and white morocco doublures. In the center of the doublures is a gilt-tooled pendant displaying a beautiful hand-painted purple flower. There are only a few copies of this edition in existence, possibly not over 10 copies. The text is beautifully printed, on one side only, of 30 leaves of genuine parchment, with an illuminated initial on each page. There is an illuminated title page on a separate leaf of parchment. So far as we know, this is the first copy of this edition to appear at a public sale in America. Published by George D. Sproul in New York, 1901. A beautiful copy.
